Bishop Rice gave us a talk one night on his mission
in Honduras. And he gave us a few minutes on that. Then he went
on to talk about Baghdad, where he had been rector. And you could
see his enthusiasm. So he just sold Baghdad to me and I guess
others in the group.
In Beirut there was a small Newman Center. And
it was going to close. So the provincial asked me if I would stay
on for a year or two. So I took on the Newman Center and over
the next two years it grew in members. Then the war broke out,
and that was the beginning of the end of everything. The nice
little Newman group continued. And I continued later on to hear
from members of the group, including an American Black woman.
The provincial had two Jesuits in a parish in
Bangor, Maine, Fr. Ray Bertrand and Fr. Tom Leguin, and was looking
for a third. So he asked me if I would take that position. He
said, "I'm not going to force you into it, but if you'd be willing
to, I'd appreciate it." I was in the Seattle area at the time,
and still not fully settled after leaving Baghdad, so after a
few minutes on the phone I said yes.
