ECUMENICAL AND PAROCHIAL LEADERSHIP |

On his pioneering work in ecumenism My work then was as a priest and teacher. Yes, I loved the teaching. But I also wanted to be involved, always, in pastoral work. I made sure that I did. I was very friendly with the bishop, and he wanted me to be involved in ecumenism, running things up there in the Berkshires and getting people involved. The ministers all knew me and I knew all of them. Ecumenism became a part of my life. And, at that time, that required a little bit more courage, if you remember. It still was not as easy as it would be later on. The ministers invited me to give talks. The bishop heard about it and he invited me to help in the diocese. So that was a part of my life. On death as going to the Lord I had a parish, St. Mary's, up there in the Berkshires and I used to help out in other parishes, too. I would always bring in faith, what it meant to be Catholic: a love of the Church and a fidelity to the Church. Then I always gave a bit of my own background. They all got to know me before long. I just said that being with Jesuits, who have worked for God and died, realizing they were going to the Lord, so they were not afraid, always gave me courage and strength as well. Due to death or sickness some of these selected readings have been read by someone other than the author. This page contains one such replacement.
